The Story of the Castle

More Than 150 Years
of Glenapp

Long before it became the setting for our wedding weekend, Glenapp Castle had already lived many lives. Its sandstone towers have witnessed industrial ambition, aristocratic families, daring adventures, years of silence and an extraordinary restoration.

1870

A Scottish Baronial Dream

The Glenapp Estate was already well established when industrialist James Hunter acquired the property and commissioned celebrated Edinburgh architect David Bryce to create a magnificent country home.

Bryce designed Glenapp in the Scottish Baronial style, blending Gothic and Renaissance influences to create its sandstone battlements, soaring turrets and unmistakably romantic silhouette.

In 1917, the castle passed to James Lyle Mackay, who later became the first Earl of Inchcape and served as chairman of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company.

His daughter, Elsie Mackay, became an actress, designer and daring aviator. In 1928, she attempted to cross the Atlantic in a single-engine aircraft. She and her co-pilot disappeared during the journey and were never seen again.

1994 Restoration Begins

After years of decline, the McMillan family begins a six-year restoration of the castle and gardens.

2001 A New Chapter

Glenapp joins Relais & Châteaux and becomes one of Britain’s celebrated luxury castle hotels.

2015 New Custodians

Paul and Poppy Szkiler acquire Glenapp and continue preserving its history and estate.

Choose Your
Adventure

From falconry in the castle woodlands to whisky beside the fire, Glenapp offers countless ways to make the weekend your own.

Adventure Freely, but Mind the Clock

The Wedding Comes First

Guests are warmly invited to enjoy any experience Glenapp Castle offers, provided it does not interfere with a scheduled wedding event.

Please check the weekend itinerary before arranging an activity. Everyone should remain available for all welcome gatherings, shared dinners, wedding-day events and scheduled transportation.

Review the schedule first. Do not reserve an experience that overlaps with a wedding event.

Allow time to return and change. Activities should end early enough for you to prepare comfortably.

Confirm before booking. Availability, timing and weather requirements should be discussed directly with Glenapp.
